For world-leading iron ore producers like Rio Tinto, the stability of the power supply is the backbone of production. The mining industry presents a unique set of engineering challenges: equipment must endure heavy dust accumulation, frequent load fluctuations from heavy machinery, and strict safety protocols regarding fire hazards in confined or remote environments.
Rio Tinto needed a partner capable of delivering transformers that offered high overload capacity and impeccable safety records, all while adhering to stringent international compliance standards. CEEG provided the solution.
Mining operations cannot afford downtime. The electrical infrastructure must solve three critical industry problems:
Heavy Duty Cycles: Mining machinery creates massive power spikes. Transformers must handle rapid load changes and high thermal stress without degrading.
Fire Safety & Ventilation: In processing plants and ventilated environments, equipment must be self-extinguishing and risk-free (Class F1 standard).
Dust Contamination: Iron ore production generates significant dust, requiring equipment that is easy to maintain and resistant to clogging or tracking.
CEEG addressed these specific operational pain points by delivering 52 sets of class C insulated VPI transformers to Rio Tinto in 2012:
Handling Thermal Stress: By utilizing DuPont Nomex® insulation technology, CEEG transformers can withstand temperatures up to 220°C. This high thermal reserve allows the units to easily handle the overload shocks typical of mining operations without aging prematurely.
Certified Compliance: CEEG proved its ability to meet global regulatory requirements. The units are the fifirst CSA-certified Class C insulated ventilated transformers produced in China, also passed KEMA E2, C2, and F1 tests, certifying their reliability against environmental stress and fire risks.
Operational Efficiency: We helped Rio Tinto reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs by achieving a remarkable 99.26% energy efficiency.
The deployment was a success, earning CEEG the "Most Innovative Supplier Award" in emerging markets and securing our status as a Rio Tinto Certified Supplier.
In 2018, the partnership expanded when Rio Tinto dispatched a 10-member global procurement team to CEEG’s manufacturing base. The team audited our manufacturing processes and technical expertise to ensure our consistency in continuous, long-term cooperation, as well as to assess our potential to supply other Rio Tinto plants. This successful visit confirmed our manufacturing capabilities and laid a solid ground for our cooperation relationship till today.
